The role of social identity in a suicide prevention programme for construction workers in Australia
Each year, more than 700 000 people die by suicide globally, the majority of whom are men. The United Nations and World Health Organization have set targets to reduce suicide rates by one-third by 2030. While large-scale suicide prevention programmes are required to meet these targets, diffusion of these types of initiatives is difficult—particularly with male populations. This qualitative study investigated the MATES in Construction suicide prevention programme in Australia. Health promotion international 22 October 2024

Leading by example: Identity leadership and mental health in men’s sheds members
The impact of leadership on members’ mental health outcomes in community-based mutual-aid organizations such as Men’s Shed is unknown. The authors analyzed (a) whether identity leadership is associated with Shed members’ mental health, and (b) whether these links are mediated by psychological safety, social network quality, and social identity. Path analysis on data collected from 162 Australian Men’s Shed members revealed statistically significant associations between identity leadership and each mechanism, and the model accounted for significant variance in mental health outcomes (14%–24%, ps < .001). Only social network quality and psychological safety were associated with unique variance in mental health outcomes. All indirect effects via social network quality and psychological safety were significant. These findings suggest the proposed mechanisms explain the relationship between identity leadership mental health outcomes in mutual-aid organizations such as Men’s Sheds. The impact of media-based mental health campaigns on male help-seeking: a systematic review
More than half of all men do not seek professional help for depression, suicide and anxiety. Although media-based campaigns represent a promising health promotion intervention to improve male help-seeking, it is unclear what communication strategies in extant mental health media-based campaigns are effective for men. The aim of this systematic review was to synthesize information about the effectiveness of these campaigns on male help-seeking outcomes. Health promotion international 3 September 2024

Share his troubles: perceptions of men living with grief
The National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement by the Australian Government seeks to reduce men’s suicide rates. Yet men who experience grief face unique challenges, including stigmatisation when they are perceived as failing to adhere loyally to their socialised gendered role. Journal of men’s health 30 August 2024

E-mental health interventions for men: an urgent call for cohesive Australian policy and investment

  • Few Australian men who experience mental ill-health access mental healthcare from a health professional.
  • E-mental health (eMH) interventions tailored to men’s preferences and needs may facilitate men’s care access and reduce health inequities.
  • Australian health policies, and international men’s health policies, lack specific levels for action on developing and evaluating eMH for men.
  • Specific, cohesive policy responses are likely to increase investment in eMH for men, increase men’s access to effective, acceptable mental healthcare, and improve men’s mJental health and well-being.
  • Integrated health policy responses are required to invest and scale men’s eMH strategies at national, international and global levels.

The impact of inaccessibility to information and support on paternal mental health
The mental well-being of men undergoing the transition into fatherhood remains a focal point in public health discourse. In the United Kingdom, fathers encounter limited access to information and support compared to mothers, prompting an exploration of their experiences and the consequential impact on their mental health throughout the stages from pregnancy to post-birth. Journal of men’s health 30 May 2024

How employment status affects adult men's depression over time: a comparative study of educational attainment
As the prevalence of depression among adult men has been increasing over time, a longitudinal approach is necessary to understand more deeply how adult men’s depression prevalence has been changing and what indicators influence their levels of depression over time. This study examines how employment status affects adult men’s depression and investigates an interaction effect of education level on the relationship between employment and depression. Male-friendly counselling for young men: a thematic analysis of client and caregiver experiences of Menslink counselling
What is already known about this topic:

  • Adolescent and young men face personal and structural barriers to help-seeking despite experiencing significant rates of mental illness in Australia.
  • In recent years, male-friendly adaptations to clinical practice have been proposed to engage young men in psychotherapy.
  • Little is known about how both young men and caregivers who facilitate access experience male-friendly counselling.

What this topic adds:

  • Male-friendly adaptations akin to those proposed in the literature enriched the counselling experience of young men and their caregivers.
  • Young men valued a counselling service dedicated to them which consequently reduced the stigma associated with seeking support.
  • Low-cost and timely services, the availability of male clinicians, and clinicians who supported the autonomy of young men were salient facilitators to their service engagement.

Association between low total serum testosterone and body mass index in Australian survivors of testicular cancer: a retrospective analysis
Low total serum testosterone was common in survivors of testicular cancer, and associated with a higher body mass index prior to orchidectomy, suggesting that elevated body mass index may contribute to low testosterone in this population, and that body weight, diet, and exercise should be addressed in testicular cancer follow-up. Survival of men with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer and adrenal-permissive HSD3B1 inheritance
These data demonstrated an inherited physiologic driver of prostate cancer mortality is associated with clinical outcomes and is potentially pharmacologically reversible. The journal of clinical investigation 20 September 2024

The impact of the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia with lower urinary tract symptoms on quality of life, a scoping literature review aided by AI
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) refers to a non-cancerous condition characterized by hyperplastic changes in stromal and epithelial cells. BPH can cause lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) that decrease quality of life (QoL). The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is a validated tool used to assess and guide the management of LUTS. This scoping review evaluated the difference in IPSS and QoL in patients with BPH and LUTS before and after medical or interventional treatment. Journal of men’s health 30 July 2024

Adherence outcomes and risk factors predicting non-adherence to active surveillance in patients with Stage 1 Testicular Germ Cell Tumors
Adherence with active surveillance was poorer in this cohort of stage 1 testicular cancer patients. Patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and those who were nonsmokers, unemployed, with a partner, and later date of diagnosis, were more likely to be adherent with active surveillance. Health literacy among fathers and fathers-to-be: a multi-country, cross-sectional survey

  • Health literacy, one’s ability to find, use and apply health information, can improve health and health behaviours.
  • Fathers’ health literacy strengths included finding and understanding health information.
  • Fathers (especially first-time fathers) reported difficulties with finding their way around the healthcare system, managing their health and feeling supported by healthcare providers.

Characteristics of adult male victims in intimate heterosexual relationships from domestic violence police narratives
Domestic violence (DV) perpetrated against male victims has received little attention in the literature, since men are generally the perpetrators rather than victims of DV. This study examines the characteristics of adult male victims and female Persons of Interest (POIs) suspected and/or charged with perpetrating a DV offence in an intimate relationship.
