Identifying developmental language disorder (DLD) in multilingual children: A case study tutorial
The result demonstrates the promise of this approach to collect reference data and identify DLD in multilingual children. The online Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS) battery tool has the potential to support identification of multilingual DLD in any target language. International journal of speech-language pathology 20 May 2024
Assessment and theoretical interpretation of spoken discourse and cognitive skills in two adolescents with acquired brain injury
Participants with acquired brain injury (ABI)demonstrated discourse deficits relative to the neurotypical reference sample. The findings demonstrate the value of discourse sampling across multiple genres and analysis of microlinguistic to superstructural features. A structure-building framework (SBF) model, originating in schizophrenia, provides a promising theory with which to interpret discourse impairment and has the potential to inform intervention for discourse in ABI. International journal of speech-language pathology 1 August 2024
Identifying communication difficulty and context-specific communication supports for patient-provider communication in a sub-acute setting: A prospective mixed methods study
Many sub-acute rehabilitation inpatients have communication difficulty in the hospital setting. A range of communication supports facilitated communication. These insights could inform future communication partner training (CPT) programs. International journal of speech-language pathology 29 February 2024
Validity and reliability of Dysphagia Outcome Severity Scale (DOSS) when used to rate Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES)
The Dysphagia Outcome and Severity Scale is used both clinically and within dysphagia research, internationally. Although it was developed using videofluoroscopic swallowing studies, it is frequently used to rate Flexible Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing. The validity and reliability of DOSS-use with FEES, however, has not previously been evaluated. This study investigated the validity and rater reliability of clinicians using DOSS to rate FEES. Dysphasia 24 July 2024
The Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Screening Test for patients and professionals: Validation in cognitive impairment and in severe mental illness
Dysphagia is a symptom that appears with high prevalence in persons diagnosed with dementia, intellectual disability, or severe mental illness. Risk of aspiration pneumonia or even death is very high in these populations. However, screening for dysphagia risk in these patients is complicated by the fact that most of them suffer from cognitive impairments and behavioral manifestations that hinder the assessment process using the existing screening tests. The aim of this study was to validate the Oropharyngeal Dysphagia Screening Test for Patients and Professionals, in patients with cognitive impairment (dementia/intellectual disability) or with severe mental illness (schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, or major depressive disorder). Dysphasia 13 June 2024

Research
Exploration of how youth justice staff perceive the speech-language pathology role and service provision in an Australian youth justice setting
Increased understanding of how youth justice staff perceive the role and benefits of speech-language pathology in supporting young people in contact with the youth justice system will assist with service planning, inform education strategies, and may support policy change. International journal of speech-language pathology 21 May 2024
Speech-language pathologists’ practices and perceptions of parent involvement in paediatric services funded by the NDIS in Australia
There has been concern that a shift in disability funding to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia may have influenced paediatric speech and language intervention to involve parents less in service delivery. This study aimed to describe paediatric speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs) practices and perceptions of parent involvement in NDIS-funded speech and/or language intervention. International journal of speech-language pathology 26 December 2023
Weekend speech pathology services in Australian health settings: A cross-sectional survey
There is limited research on speech-language pathology (SLP) weekend service provision across Australian healthcare services. Therefore, this study aimed to examine weekend SLP services in Australian healthcare services and explore SLP manager perspectives regarding the provision of these services. International journal of speech-language pathology 31 October 2023
‘A meaningful difference, but not ultimately the difference I would want’: A mixed-methods approach to explore and benchmark clinically meaningful changes in aphasia recovery
This mixed-methods research with people with aphasia and speech pathologists provides novel evidence to inform the definition of minimal important change (MIC) in aphasia rehabilitation. Future research will aim to establish MIC values for core Outcome measurement instruments (OMIs). Health expectations 6 August 2024

The role of speech-language pathologists in frailty: An Australian qualitative study of perceptions, practices, and opportunities
Frailty is an important geriatric syndrome, yet the role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in identifying and managing frailty remains unclear.
