World Hearing Day
3 March 2024
Did you know there are 4 million Australians living with hearing loss? This figure is predicted to increase to almost 9 million by 2050 as the population ages. World Hearing Day in Australia is held on 3 March each year to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss, and to promote better ear protection and health throughout the world. Hearing loss, hearing aid use, and risk of dementia in older adults
The results of this cohort study suggest that hearing loss was associated with increased dementia risk, especially among people not using hearing aids, suggesting that hearing aids might prevent or delay the onset and progression of dementia. The risk estimates were lower than in previous studies, highlighting the need for more high-quality longitudinal studies. JAMA 4 January 2024
Hearing loss and fatigue in middle-aged and older adults
Hearing loss was cross-sectionally associated with higher frequency of fatigue after adjustment for demographics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities in this nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older adults. JAMA 6 July 2023
An interprofessional approach to aural rehabilitation for adults with hearing loss and cognitive concerns
Individuals with hearing loss are at risk for cognitive decline. The traditional approach to audiological care does not typically involve a team approach that addresses cognitive concerns. While cognitive screening is within the scope of practice in audiology, audiologists are not typically trained in interpreting screening results or providing rehabilitation that supports cognitive health. However, as growing evidence shows that hearing loss is tied to cognitive decline, a team approach is required to support whole-person care. Speech–language pathologists, who specialize in optimizing communication, are best situated to collaborate with audiologists to provide holistic aural rehabilitation. Audiologists and speech–language pathologists who partner to support a client’s communication skills and social relationships play an important role in the life of an individual with hearing loss. In this perspective, we describe relevant background information about hearing loss and cognition and present an interprofessional approach to aural rehabilitation for adults with hearing loss who have cognitive concerns. We also discuss implications for future research. Audiology research 4 February 2024
Association of hearing aids and Cochlear implants with cognitive decline and dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis
In this meta-analysis, the usage of hearing aids and cochlear implants is associated with a decreased risk of subsequent cognitive decline; physicians should strongly encourage their patients with hearing loss to adopt such devices. JAMA neurology 5 December 2022

Can listening-related fatigue influence well-being? Examining associations between hearing loss, fatigue, activity levels and well-being
Variations and interactions between hearing loss, hearing device use, fatigue and activity levels can be expected to impact well-being in persons with hearing loss in direct and indirect ways. Future research linking hearing and daily-life fatigue should take account of activity levels. International journal of audiology 4 January 2021
Type of hearing loss among chronic suppurative otitis media patients
Conductive hearing loss was the most prevalent type with majority have moderate degree. Patients with tubo-tympanic perforation is more common than attico-antral. Whereas, sensorineural hearing loss and mixed hearing loss is also seen in these patients. Journal of Postgraduate Medical Institute 17 February 2024
Auditory profile-based hearing aid fitting: Self-reported benefit for first-time hearing aid users
First-time users experience clear benefits from hearing aid (HA) treatment. Audiology research 8 February 2024
Exploring quality of life post sudden onset hearing loss: A convergent parallel approach
The integrated findings indicated the impact on the quality of life (QoL) post- sudden onset hearing loss (SOHL) diagnosis. Convergent parallel methods should be considered by researchers to understand rare auditory pathologies and their impact on the QoL. South African journal of communication disorders 16 February 2024
Sensorineural hearing loss after cardiac surgery: a systematic review
SNHL is a rare but potentially serious complication after cardiac surgery. This hearing loss affects both paediatric and adult populations and may have significant long-term impacts. Further research is required, particularly with respect to the consideration of screening for SNHL in children after cardiac surgery. ANZ journal of surgery 23 October 2023
Impact of excessive noise generation in orthopaedic operating theatres: A comprehensive review
Excessive noise in the orthopaedic operating theatre (OT) is an underrecognized and often neglected health hazard noticed amongst surgeons, patients and theatre and scrub practitioners. Cureus 19 February 2024

Hearing rehabilitation with a chat-based mobile auditory training program in experienced hearing aid users: Prospective randomized controlled study
After using the chat-based mobile auditory training (CMAT) program, word and sentence perception performance was significantly improved in experienced hearing aid (HA) users. In addition, CMAT showed high compliance and adherence over the 2-month study period. Further investigations are needed to validate long-term efficacy in a larger population. JMIR mHealth uHealth 28 June 2023
Socioeconomic status among Cochlear implant candidates and association with surgical pursuance
These findings suggest that individuals in lower socioeconomic strata are more likely to qualify for cochlear implants but less likely to pursue cochlear implant surgery. JAMA 24 August 2023
The effect of auditory training on listening effort in hearing-aid users: insights from a pupillometry study
The results demonstrate that using a listening effort metric adds additional insights into the effectiveness of auditory training compared to the situation when only speech-in-noise performance is considered. Trends observed in pupil responses suggested increased effort—both after the training and the placebo intervention—most likely reflecting the effect of the individual’s motivation. International journal of audiology 30 January 2024
Hearing aids reduce daily-life fatigue and increase social activity: A longitudinal study
This study is the first to make a longitudinal measurement of fatigue before and after first-ever hearing aid fitting and to identify an increase in social activity level after hearing aid fitting. These findings have important implications for future research and the clinical practice of hearing aid fitting. Trends in hearing 8 November 2021
Reasons for the non-use of hearing aids: perspectives of non-users, past users, and family members
Differences in reasons for non-use may provide further insight for researchers and clinicians and help inform future clinical practice in addressing the low uptake and use of hearing aids by people with hearing loss and the role of family members in audiological rehabilitation. International journal of audiology 9 October 2023

An evaluation of the quality of ear health services for Aboriginal children living in remote Australia: a cascade of care analysis
This cascade of care analysis found that ear health surveillance and compliance with otitis media guidelines for treatment and follow-up were both low. Further research is required to identify effective strategies that improve ear health services in remote settings. BMC health services research 31 October 2023
Analysis of sign language skills in improving communication and learning for deaf children
This study uses qualitative methods that aim to identify and describe how sign language skills improve communication and learning for deaf children. Continuous education 10 February 2024
Sociodemographic disparities and hearing-related quality of life in children with hearing loss
The findings of this cohort study suggest that race and ethnicity and neighborhood disadvantage are associated with hearing-related quality of life (QOL) in deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. JAMA 23 October 2023
Cochlear implantation and educational and quality-of-life outcomes in adolescence
Findings from this study indicate that children with severe to profound hearing loss who use cochlear implants have better educational outcomes and quality of life, regardless of age at implantation, than children without cochlear implants. JAMA 29 June 2023
The effects of music listening time with headphones on hearing thresholds among the young population
Although the hearing thresholds of the study group were worse than those of the control group in the 4000 Hz, 6000 Hz, 14,000 Hz, 16,000 Hz, and 18,000 Hz bands, the hearing thresholds of both groups were still within the hearing range and could be classified as normal. It should be remembered that hearing will deteriorate if a person listens to loud or very loud music continuously through headphones. The public, especially young people, should be made aware of this. The Egyptian journal of otolaryngology 24 January 2024
