Mental health

A theory-based examination of the predictors of mental health help-seeking in young men
The current research supports the value of the Prototype Willingness Model (PWM) in understanding males’ mental health help-seeking behaviour. The study enhances awareness of key factors which may inform young men’s willingness to engage in support services for their mental health. Australian psychologist 24 September 2023

Mental health help-seeking behaviour in men
Despite significant advances in health care in recent decades, men do not appear to have benefited equally. Globally, men have a lower life expectancy than women. Across a range of measures, men's general health is poorer than that of women. Biological characteristics, occupational factors and health behaviours may all contribute to this gender-related difference; however, it has also been posited that the help-seeking behaviour of men plays a significant role. Journal of advanced nursing 14 September 2023

Men who self-harm—A scoping review of a complex phenomenon
This scoping review concludes that self-harm among men should be understood as a complex, socially and culturally conditioned phenomenon. To empower men and support their recovery from self-harm, a person-centred approach should be incorporated into research on the subject and practice. Journal of advanced nursing 21 December 2021

Stop being a wuss: People's perceptions of men experiencing grief in Australia
The study suggests that a stronger research focus should be targeted towards rectifying stigma resulting from men's expression of vulnerable emotions by incorporating in depth interviews in order to create worthwhile public awareness initiatives. Such initiatives should seek to minimise societal pressures that are placed upon men to ensure conformity to dominant masculine ideologies and their socialised gendered role when experiencing and expressing vulnerable emotions such as grief. Health promotion journal of Australia 13 September 2023

Becoming a non-resident father: Marginalised through distress, disadvantage and disempowerment
The implications of marginalisation for non-resident fathers' mental health, as outlined by the participants, are discussed regarding the impact of becoming a non-resident father, legal aspects, welfare service experiences and relationship with ex-partner. The chronic stress experienced by non-resident fathers who often find themselves in a situation which is difficult to resolve without major compromises to their desired outcomes must be recognised. Health promotion journal of Australia 1 October 2023

Mental health disparities among homosexual men and minorities: A systematic review
Mental health disparities in sexual minorities, particularly homosexual and bisexual men, are a significant public health concern. This study examines six key themes: general psychiatric issues, health services, minority stress, trauma and PTSD, substance and drug misuse, and suicidal ideation. The aim is to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence, identify potential intervention and prevention strategies, and address knowledge gaps in understanding the unique experiences of homosexual and bisexual men. American journal of men’s health 23 May 2023

“Is life worth living?”: The role of masculinity in the way men aged over 80 talk about living, dying, and suicide
Men aged 85 years and over have the highest rate of suicide of any age or gender group in Australia. However, little is known about their trajectory toward suicide. The objective of this study was to understand the role of masculine norms and other life factors in the suicidality of older men. American journal of men’s health 29 October 2020

Men’s dropout from mental health services: Results from a survey of Australian men across the life span
While increasing numbers of Australian men are accessing mental health services, the sustainability of their therapy engagement varies significantly, with many men being lost to follow-up. The current study investigated dropout rates in a large community-based male sample to highlight the reasons for, and potential predictors of, men dropping out of mental health care services. American journal of men’s health 27 May 2023

Prostate Cancer

Benefits and harms of prostate specific antigen testing according to Australian guidelines
In Australia, men ages 50 to 69 may choose to undergo prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing every 2 years. The benefits of this approach, however, remain uncertain. Here, using a model validated against international and local data from 1985 to 2011, the authors estimated lifetime prostate cancer mortality reductions and overdiagnosis risk for Australian men who choose to undergo regular PSA testing. The findings provide baseline estimates for the current review of national PSA testing guidelines in Australia. International journal of cancer 11 October 2023

A robust evaluation of 49 high-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy treatment plans including all major uncertainties
Assessing treatment plan robustness improves plan quality assurance, is achievable in less than 1-min, and identifies treatment plans with poor robustness, allowing re-optimization before delivery. Journal of applied clinical medical physics 14 October 2023

Population-based patient-reported quality of life outcomes following low-dose-rate versus high-dose-rate brachytherapy monotherapy for low-intermediate risk prostate cancer
This is the first Australian population-based study comparing QoL in men who had LDR-BT and HDR-BT, with no statistically or clinically significant differences in QoL observed at 12-month post-treatment. Journal of medical imaging and radiation oncology 12 October 2023

Triptorelin therapy for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in prostate cancer patients: A systematic meta-analysis
Triptorelin therapy may offer an effective treatment option for men with prostate cancer (PCa) experiencing moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Its positive impact on QoL can lead to improved patient well-being and treatment adherence. Clinicians should consider triptorelin as a potential treatment choice, especially in patients who may be reluctant to undergo surgical interventions for their LUTS. However, careful patient selection and close monitoring are essential due to the observed study heterogeneity and risk of bias. Future research should focus on evaluating triptorelin's cost-effectiveness and comparing its efficacy with other LH-RH agonists in managing LUTS in PCa patients. BJUI Compass 10 October 2023

Prognostic factors for mental wellbeing in prostate cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The authors highlight the existing evidence for prognostic factors in mental wellbeing outcomes in prostate cancer, allowing us to consider high-risk groups of patients for preventative and treatment measures. However, the current evidence is heterogenous with further work required exploring less conclusive factors and outcomes. Psycho-Oncology 3 October 2023

Improved outcomes with Enzalutamide in biochemically recurrent prostate cancer
In patients with prostate cancer with high-risk biochemical recurrence, enzalutamide plus leuprolide was superior to leuprolide alone with respect to metastasis-free survival; enzalutamide monotherapy was also superior to leuprolide alone. The safety profile of enzalutamide was consistent with that shown in previous clinical studies, with no apparent detrimental effect on quality of life. NEJM 19 October 2023

‘A Different Ball Game’: Adaptation of a men’s health program for implementation in rural Australia
Rural areas were described as ‘a different ball game’ due to limited local services and resources in comparison to metropolitan areas. Study fndings have synergies with previous studies undertaken in rural contexts including in relation to the power of word of mouth, the importance of trust, and local partner organisations. Findings have implications for engaging rural men in health interventions in rural contexts where professional sporting contexts are not available. Assessing the extent to which the adapted Aussie-FIT program can reach and engage men in rural Australia, and exploring the barriers and facilitators to delivering the program in rural contexts is required. BMC public health 19 July 2023

Men's help-seeking and engagement with general practice: An integrative review
This review has provided insight into the issues around the barriers to health care engagement, men's understanding of the role of general practice and their associated help-seeking. Seeking to further understand these issues could assist in the development of strategies to promote engagement of men with general practice health care. Journal of advanced nursing 5 April 2022

Aboriginal Men’s Business: A literature review of factors affecting Aboriginal men accessing sexual health services
This review presented several concerning factors and evidence of the difficulties for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men accessing sexual health services. Literature identified the longstanding health statistics and deterioration of health and social and emotional wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. While both mainstream health and non-government services are offering limited provision of culturally safe and appropriate healthcare pathways. Journal of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet 23 April 2023

Australian men’s sheds and their role in the health and wellbeing of men: A systematic review
Men’s sheds are a community-based organisation that allows a space for a community of men to interact and engage with one another with hands-on activities. As such, men’s sheds form an appropriate setting to deliver health and wellbeing initiatives. This review aims to understand the role of Australian men’s sheds with respect to the health and wellbeing of their male participants. Health and social care in the community 27 March 2023

Engaging culturally diverse fathers in maternal and family healthcare: Experiences and perspectives of healthcare professionals
Overall, healthcare professionals are willing to include culturally diverse fathers. However, the ability of culturally diverse families to engage with healthcare services is impacted by the cultural competency of the services. So what? Healthcare delivered during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum year may be improved by adopting a whole-family approach, which considers the needs and perspectives of fathers and partners. However, particular attention is needed to ensure healthcare policies and practices are culturally competent to meet the needs of fathers from culturally diverse backgrounds. Health promotion journal of Australia 27 June 2023

Equipping fathers to support distressed mothers: What do mothers want fathers to know and do?
Information provided by distressed mothers can provide guidance to professionals when designing information for fathers/partners. Digital delivery of this co-designed information to fathers across urban and rural areas may enhance the competence of fathers working to support mothers experiencing mental distress in the perinatal period. Health promotion journal of Australia 16 June 2023

Testicular cancer

Characteristics of selected social campaigns in the prevention of testicular cancer
Testicular cancer is a significant health problem among men, especially young men. They often visit the doctor too late because they are afraid to see a specialist. Diagnosis of cancer and early treatment are associated with a high probability of recovery. Given these circumstances, prevention is of great importance from an individual and public health perspective. One tool for this can be social campaigns with messages targeted at men of different ages and their relatives. Medical studies 30 September 2023

Patterns of relapse in Australian patients with Clinical Stage 1 Testicular Cancer: Utility of the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials group surveillance recommendations
In this cohort of stage 1 testicular cancer, where national surveillance recommendations have been widely adopted, recurrences were detected at routine surveillance visits and, almost exclusively, asymptomatic with IGCCCG good-prognosis disease. This provides reassurance that active surveillance is safe. JCO oncology practice 16 June 2023
