Trends in osteoporosis diagnosis and management in Australia Archives of osteoporosis 19 July 2022
Available data indicates that osteoporosis screening rates changed over time from 2001 to 2018 and that changes to government policy had a significant effect on the rates at which screening was performed. Over the same timeframe, there was a sustained reduction in hip fracture hospitalisation rates, with no change to reported osteoporosis prevalence. This suggests that policy changes permitting unlimited access to BMD measurement were associated with a reduction in osteoporotic fractures, but may also have been associated with overutilisation. Prospective studies to assess the efficacy of specific policies to ensure screening is performed in accordance with best-practice guidelines may be desirable.

Implementation of a clinical pathway for osteoporosis management within an Orthopaedic Fracture Clinic Orthopaedic surgery 2 July 2022
The authors have developed a low-cost pathway developed by the orthogeriatric team integrated into an orthopaedic fracture clinic that leads to increased screening and treatment of osteoporosis. This model was implemented in a tertiary hospital with an integrated inpatient orthogeriatric service and highly engaged orthopaedic surgeons and may not be applicable in other settings.

Application of machine learning model to predict osteoporosis based on abdominal computed tomography images of the psoas muscle: a retrospective study BMC geriatrics 13 October 2022
The authors developed six machine learning models to predict osteoporosis based on psoas muscle images of abdominal CT, and the GBM model had the best predictive performance. GBM model can better help clinicians to diagnose osteoporosis and provide timely anti-osteoporosis treatment for patients. In the future, the research team will strive to include participants from multiple institutions to conduct external validation of the ML model of this study.

Dietary acid load is associated with primary osteoporosis in postmenopausal women aged 50–65 years: A cross-sectional study Food science and nutrition 13 October 2022
This study aimed to investigate the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and primary osteoporosis.

The use of antidepressants is linked to bone loss: A systematic review and metanalysis Orthopedic Review 13 October 2022
These data suggest that SSRIs are associated with a decrease of BMD. The authors aim to raise clinicians’ awareness of the potential association between the use of antidepressants and bone fragility to increase monitoring of bone health.

Quality of Life in osteoporotic patients Orthopedic Review 13 October 2022
Physical and social function is reduced in osteoporotic subjects. High BMI and an increased risk of fragility fracture were main determinants of impairment in the QoL in this study.

Effectiveness and safety of bisphosphonates therapy in secondary osteoporosis in children Anales de Pediatría 29 July 2022
Bisphosphonates are effective in secondary osteoporosis in children. Response seems to be better in patients who are able to walk, well-nourished and in the early stages of the disease. Adverse events were frequent but mild.

Recommendations on the post-acute management of the osteoporotic fracture - Patients with “very-high” Re-fracture risk Journal of orthopaedic translation 10 October 2022
Fragility fractures have become a common encounter in clinical practise in the hospital setting. This article provides recommendations on the post-acute management of fragility fracture patients at the FLS.

Glycemic control and bone in diabetes Current osteoporosis reports 10 October 2022
Further research is needed to understand the effects of hyperglycemia on skeletal health through the lifecycle, including the related factors of inflammation and microvascular damage.
