Exporting references into your EndNote Library

Below are steps to export references into some of the more popular databases. References can also be exported from Google Scholar, the Library catalogue and many of the other online journals and databases.

Exporting OVID Databases (EMBASE; PsycInfo; MEDLINE)

  • Open your EndNote Library
  • Open the OVID database and perform a search
  • Select the reference/s by clicking the checkbox next to each reference or select the 'All' checkbox (as long as there are not too many articles listed)
  • Click Export – located at the top of the results list next to the email and print icons
  • Select ‘Export to’ EndNote from the drop-down menu
  • Choose the fields to display – Citation + Abstract or Complete Reference is recommended
  • Tick the Include URL checkbox (this is optional)
  • Click on Export Citation(s)
  • Depending on the browser another box may appear or a file might download to the bottom left corner of the screen - if this happens click on the downloaded file
  • References will be directly exported into your EndNote Library
  • Once all the files have been imported, manually check each reference

 

Exporting to EndNote from PubMed

  • Open your EndNote Library
  • Open PubMed and perform a search
  • Select the reference by clicking the checkbox next to each reference
  • Click Send to – located towards the top of the results list
  • Select Citation manager and then click Create File
  • Depending on the browser another box may appear or a file might download to the bottom left corner of the screen - if this happens click on the downloaded file
  • References should directly import into your EndNote Library
  • Once all the files have been imported, manually check each reference

 

Exporting to EBSCO Databases (e.g. MEDLINE; CINAHL)

  • Open your EndNote Library
  • Open the EBSCO database and perform a search
  • Select the reference/s by clicking on the folder icon which appears next to each reference (on the right); this will add them to your “folder”
  • Once all articles have been added, go to Folder (located at the top of the screen) and double click to see all selected items
  • From the folder list either select the individual reference/s you would like exported into EndNote by clicking the checkbox next to the reference; or, click the Select/deselect all box
  • Select Export
  • Select Direct Export in RIS Format…and click save
  • The references should be directly exported into EndNote
  • Once all the files have been exported, manually check each reference
