EndNote: Information and User Guides

From the beginning

  • Once installed, open EndNote from the start menu and click on File and then select New to create your EndNote library
  • You can change the file name, or the default name can be kept (My EndNote Library)
  • Your EndNote library will consist of two files; a .Data and .enl file. These files are your EndNote library and will contain all your library's information - do not delete them

Manually creating a reference

Although most references will be exported into your EndNote library electronically some may need to be entered in manually:

To manually enter a record...

  • Select New Reference from the References menu at the top of the screen
  • An empty Reference window will open with "New Reference" displayed at the top
  • Select the Reference Type. The default is Journal Article, but take a look at the drop-down list to select a different format (e.g. newspaper, conference paper, book)
  • Input the reference details into the appropriate fields (not all fields need to be completed; only those which are relevant to you)
  • You will automatically be prompted to save a manually entered reference when exiting the page
